"Finding My Unique Voice Through Musical Syncretism"

Join Neko Cortez '20 for "Finding My Voice Through Musical Syncretism," a performance and lecture on Kulintang music. Neko studied Kulintang in the Philippines in the Summer of 2019 on a Shansi In-Asia Grant. The event is on Sunday, March 1st at 2pm in Warner Studio 3.

Welcoming our Spring 2020 Visiting Scholars!

Oberlin Shansi would like to welcome our three new Visiting Scholars! This semester we are joined by Dr. Angel Christy from Lady Doak College, Irma Suryani from Syiah Kuala University, and Upi Isabella Rea from Gadjah Mada Univeristy. They are very excited to take classes at the college, conduct independent research, and attend conferences outside of Oberlin. We've provided brief bios below. Introducing the 2020 Shansi Fellows To China!

We are proud to introduce our newest Shansi Fellows to China! Jennifer Lin ‘20 and Rex Simmons ‘19 will teach at Shanxi Agricultural University and Beijing Normal University, respectively. Jenn Lin ‘20 majored in Art History and Creative Writing with an East Asian Studies minor. Her work as a Residential Assistant in Asia House and as an organizer for several A/PID cultural organizations and events such as AS I AM, Pan-Asian Committee, and Asia America Art Collective sparked her interest in community-centered activism, education, and growth. Meet the 2020 Shansi Fellows to Japan!

We are thrilled to introduce our newest Shansi Fellows to Japan! Ava Prince ‘18 will teach at JF Oberlin University and Léo Anderson ‘20 will work at the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and local grassroots NGOs in Hiroshima. Ava was a History major and East Asian Studies minor at Oberlin. As a senior, she served as the Outreach Coordinator for a visiting public history exhibit, Courage and Compassion: Our Shared Story of the Japanese American World War II Experience. In this role, she developed educational programming for Lorain County’s K-12 students. Ava has continued to pursue a career in museum education since graduation, utilizing object-based learning techniques to enc

Please join us in welcoming our new Indonesia Fellows! Kara Nepomuceno ’20 will be going to Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and Ora Hammel ’20 will be going to Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh. Kara is a Dance and Biology Major with a minor in Comparative American Studies. At Oberlin, Kara facilitated first-year workshops and helped to train fellow student leaders through the Peer Advising Leaders Program. A Co-chair of the Filipino American Students Association, Kara organized educational programs and performances in the Oberlin Asian American community.
