Announcing the New Cohort of Shansi Fellows!

Congratulations to the 2020 Oberlin Shansi Fellows!

Five Oberlin seniors and two recent alumni have been selected as new Shansi Fellows for 2020. These talented, adventurous, and engaged Obies will work with Shansi’s partner NGOs and universities in China, India, Indonesia, and Japan.

Two of the new Fellows will be going to China. Rex Simmons ’19, an Environmental Studies and East Asian Studies major will work at Beijing Normal University. Jennifer Lin ’20, an Art History and Creative Writing major, will teach English at Shanxi Agricultural University.

Our Indonesia Fellows are Kara Nepomuceno ’20, a Dance and Biology major, and Ora Hammel ‘20, an Environmental Studies major. Kara and Ora will teach at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, respectively.

In Japan, Ava Prince ’18, a History major, will join the English Language Teaching Faculty at JF Oberlin University in Machida. Léo Anderson ‘20, a Politics and Visual Arts major, will join the UN Institute on International Research and Training (UNITAR) and the teams of two peace-building NGOs in Hiroshima.

This year, we are excited to announce that Madeleine Gefke ‘20, a Biology and Environmental Studies major, will serve as our inaugural Fellow to The Keystone Foundation, an eco-development organization that operates in the Nilgiri Biosphere in South India.

Please keep an eye out for posts of the Fellows’ biographies and photos in January.
