This event will be a celebration of Shansi's distinguished history of engagement with Taiwan through live storytelling from Shansi Reps, Fellows, grantees, and related experts as they recount specific experiences of their time in Taiwan.

If you can join, please register in advance for this Zoom event here, or scan the QR Code on the poster below. After registering, you will receive the login link.

Shansi's history in Taiwan began in 1954, when Dave Elder and Lenny Hirschberger started as Shansi Reps there, before moving to the newly established Tunghai University in 1955. Over the following 20 years, 45 Shansi Reps lived and worked in Taiwan, while 14 Visiting Scholars from Tunghai University came to Oberlin for research and academic collaboration–with each individual contributing to the tapestry of memories that define Shansi’s rich history.

Although Shansi no longer conducts permanent programming in Taiwan, we continue to support short-term engagements through grant programs and travel funds for Fellows. Moreover, our alumni have helped deepen cross-cultural understanding of Taiwan, with critical scholarship from North America and meaningful contributions to academic and professional programs.

It is in this spirit of deep and lasting emotional and intellectual connection, that we invite you to join us in recounting the various memories that have defined Shansi’s legacy in Taiwan.
