This Fellowship provides an opportunity for a motivated and independent Oberlin graduate to work with university students, primarily at the undergraduate level, as well as college staff and administrators. Shansi Fellows will have the opportunity to gain valuable, first-hand professional experience in different aspects of university operations.
About Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam's economic, entrepreneurial, and cultural hub – a dynamic metropolis where tradition and innovation come together. Home to more than ten million people, the city offers an exciting blend of historic landmarks, thriving cafés, a vibrant arts scene, and one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing innovation ecosystems. With affordable living costs and easy access to the rest of Vietnam and the region, Ho Chi Minh City is an ideal place for Fellows seeking both professional growth and cultural immersion.
About Fulbright University of Vietnam
Fulbright University Vietnam is the first private not-for-profit university in Vietnam. Located in Ho Chi Minh City, Fulbright is an independent liberal arts university dedicated to educating globally-minded citizens through interdisciplinary teaching, research, and innovation. English is the language of instruction, and the university brings together faculty, students, and staff from Vietnam and around the world in a collaborative and student-centered learning environment.
The Fellowship
Fellows at Fulbright University Vietnam will have the opportunity to support students both as Academic Writing Specialists within the Learning Support department and as Intercultural Ambassador within the Global Engagement office. Throughout the fellowship, there will be opportunities to work closely with students, faculty, and staff to enhance students' academic success, critical thinking, research and writing proficiency, and intercultural learning.
Fulbright University Vietnam is committed to engaging fellows in collaborative professional opportunities. Fellows will:
Provide one on one and small group tutoring to help students develop their academic writing skills, focusing on grammar, punctuation, and critical thinking.
Coordinate and facilitate initiatives like FUV Writers Group and FUV Book Club
Design and facilitate workshops, class visits and other programs to support student academic success.
Work alongside other members of the Learning Support team to provide comprehensive academic support across the university.
Support outbound exchange and study abroad students through information sessions, peer advising, and pre-departure workshops.
Assist with orientation and cultural integration activities for inbound international students and visiting scholars.
Welcome international delegations, visiting scholars, and short-term international programs (ie., the Summer School) as appropriate.
Outside of these core responsibilities, fellows may find opportunities to propose new projects and engagements, including volunteer work outside of campus and possible research assistantship.
Fellows should bring knowledge and skills related to academic writing, qualitative or quantitative research, intercultural communication, and student engagement, as well as their own diverse professional experiences to the FUV community. A strong understanding of the academic writing process, genuine curiosity about international education and cultural exchange, and empathy for the struggles of students navigating higher education for the first time will be essential for success.
What does a strong candidate for the Fellowship to FUV look like?
For this fellowship, we are looking for applicants with a background in writing, ideally with some experience tutoring, mentoring, or working with university students. Candidates should have the ability to help students develop their research, writing, and editing skills. Excellent communication, interpersonal and intercultural skills are a must. Previous experience in creative writing and copy editing is also a major plus.
We also value applicants who are enthusiastic about international education and cross-cultural exchange. The ideal Fellow is someone who enjoys facilitating workshops and group activities, mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, and helping students prepare for global opportunities. Candidates should be adaptable, collaborative, proactive, and excited to contribute to a dynamic liberal arts university committed to developing globally connected citizens.
